METROS ANNOUNCE WORKING AGREEMENT WITH CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC
The St. Catharines Nokona Metros
are pleased to announce they have reached an agreement with the Pelham Chiropractic Clinic to serve as athletic therapists
for the club during the 2007 season. Harry Krekorian, a long-time local athlete and sports enthusiast, will be conducting
a lot of the team's athletic programs and physio during the course of the season. The Pelham Clinic also serves the
St. Catharines Jr. B Falcons Hockey Club, as well as the St. Catharines Athletics Lacrosse team in a similar capacity and
the Metros are thrilled to have such a highly regarded clinic working closely with them. For more information on Pelham's
services, please e-mail the clinic at www.pcwc@bellnet.ca, or check out the ad on our Sponsors Page. Welcome
aboard, Harry!
By the way, last nights dinner time rains
forced cancellation of the Metros Monday night workout leaving them with just 4 before the opener on May 5. Players
are asked to "do whatever they can" to get to those workouts. The practices are:
The St. Catharines Metros, who have been
anxiously awaiting the arrival of mid-April for their first outdoor practice have to wait a bit longer. The recent rain
in the area, has not allowed the field at Dempsey Park enough time to dry and is, in fact, under water. Therefore, Thursday's
scheduled first outdoor workout has been cancelled. The team will try it again on Saturday. Here is the entire
outdoor practice schedule as it stands...
Saturday, April 21 - 12:00 to 2:00
Monday, April 23 - 6:00 to 8:00
Thursday, April 26 - 6:00 to 8:00
Saturday, April 28 - 12:00 to 2:00
Monday, April 30 - 6:00 to 8:00
Thursday, May 3 - 6:00 to 8:00
Please check your e-mail in-box for further
information about these practices.
In the meantime...we've added some new
photos from the indoor workouts at Thorold High School. Check out the Photo Album link.
It is with a great deal of disappointment
that the St. Catharines Metros are announcing the cancellation of the Hap Walters Senior Baseball Challenge for 2007.
Unfortunately, the shift of the Senior Elimination Tourney to the July 15th weekend (normally the Hap Walters weekend) created
too big of a hurdle for the tournament to overcome.
Although some teams did respond to the
change of weekends (to August 1st), ultimately there was not enough of a positive response to have a viable tournament on
that weekend. A shift of weekends was investigated but park time in the Niagara area was found to be unavailable, leaving
cancellation as the only option.
The Metros would like to emphasize that
this is (hopefully) only a temporary situation, caused by the switch of the Elims for this year. It is our intention
to continue the "Hap" next year and for years to come...and your continued support would be appreciated, down the road.
We would like the opportunity to bring the Hap Walters Senior Baseball Challenge back, bigger and better in 2008, and return
it to its rightful place as one of the top tournaments for Senior ball in the province.
The St. Catharines Metros would like to
proudly announce that Mathew (Hap) Walters has been elected to the St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame. The election was
announced on Wednesday in St. Catharines with the formal induction to take place at Club Roma on Tuesday, April 10th.
As you may know, Hap Walters is the late
father of Metros GM Mark Walters, and is credited with keeping baseball in St. Catharines alive in the 1960's, when interest
in Senior baseball was at its lowest point in history. Hap was also an important cog in the reformation of the Niagara District
Senior League in 1969 and managed the various St. Catharines entries in that league to 6 championships in the 14 years he
was involved. He also piloted 2 of those teams to OBA Championship finals in 1972 and 1974, and helped steer the 1983 St.
Catharines Juniors to their first OBA title in 39 years. For Hap's complete bio, please read the story in the archive
section of this website.
This election to the "Hall" comes 23 years
after he was named St. Catharines Sportsman of the Year in 1984. The voting is done by the St. Catharines Sports Hall
of Fame committee as well as a number of local writers and broadcasters. As mentioned, the formal induction ceremony
will take place in the Starlight Room at Club Roma, on Tuesday April 10th. The inductees and their families will then
be treated to tickets to the St. Catharines Sports Celebrity dinner the same night at the main hall at Club Roma. The
guest speakers at the Dinner, this year are Jean Beliveau, Johnny Bower, Dennis Hull and Angelo Mosca.
The Metros are very proud to be a small
part of the long and vibrant history of Senior ball in St. Catharines. They are also proud to have named their yearly
tournament (one of the highest profile tournaments in the province each summer) after the newest member of the St. Catharines
Sports Hall of Fame - Mathew "Hap" Walters.

Niagara Metros Bi-Weekly "Baseball Film
Feature"
.
This week on
our "Baseball Film Feature", we are taking you back to February of 2008...and looking at the testimony that
got Roger Clemens in so much trouble. If you missed it, on August 19th a U.S. federal grand jury indicted Roger
Clemens on charges of making false statements to Congress about his use of performance-enhancing drugs.
The 19-page indictment charges Clemens with three counts of
making false statements and two counts of perjury in connection with his February 2008 testimony before the House Committee
on Oversight and Government Reform. According to the United States attorney's office, Clemens faces a maximum sentence of
30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine, but under the current sentencing guidelines, a conviction would likely bring 15-21
months.
So what was it that he said that got the U.S. Congress so steamed? We have it for you right here.
Just press play, and judge for yourself...was Roger lying??
