This coming Thursday is a big day on the
C.O.B.A. Major Baseball League's annual calendar. That is the night that the League honours its most outstanding teams
and players from the 2007 season. The gracious hosts, once again this year, will be the Dundas Chiefs...as the
event will be held at the Dundas Air Force Club, just a couple of blocks up from Volunteer Field on King St.
The team awards have already been
decided...and will receive some well-earned recognition. The Milton Red Sox put together an amazing undefeated run in
August, and won the "Barry Dobson" Playoff Championship Trophy...while the Etobicoke Rangers had yet another outstanding year,
to win the "Anson Buck Trophy" emblamatic of the team finishing with the best record during the 27-game regular season.
The Rangers also won the Andrews Division title and the Trophy that goes with it...while the St. Catharines Metros won
their 9th - Johnson Divison title in 2007. These are the trophies that we do know the recipients of.
The individual award-winners and
finalists will be announced on Thursday night, with some outstanding nominees up for the hardware. Some of the
Metros players nominated for the various awards and All-Star Team recognition include: Pitchers Brian Essery, Jason
Ermers and Ian Horner; Infielders Joe Roach, Jonathan Paul and Tim Collins; Outfielders Andrew Sorochan, Rocco
Spano and Brad Namtzu; as well as Catcher Jono Marcheterre. How many of these players ended up as Award finalists
or League All-Stars? We'll all find out on Thursday night.
It's a long, arduous process...but all
of our statistics are now up to date!
A couple of moths ago, we completed the
first step, by posting the final 2007 statistics on our "Standings / Stats" page. The next step is to update all of
our statistics in the Archive Section of the website, to include the 2007 stats. That process is now complete.
We now have updates on the Metros All Time Batting and Pitching lists, the Metros Top 20 Seasonal and Career Lists, as well
as the Metros All Time Records list.
These statistical compilations are some
of the most detailed you'll find anywhere, and are a great way to compare the numbers from the current players to those that
have donned the Metros uniform over the previous 21 years. In fact, some of the current Metros players are making their
mark on these lists...with the current numbers or players printed in "red", to highlight their position in Metros history.
To access these statistical pages, click
on the link just above this article...the one that says "Click here to visit the St. Catharines Metros Archive area".
When you get to the Archive pages, click the "Stats / Leaders / Records" link to the left of the page and then click on the
link to the statistic you'd like to check out. It makes for some very interesting reading...
As mentioned last week, we're going to
try to give you something new to look at every week here at metrosbaseball.ca.
This week we'd like to share with you
all the magic that is Cooperstown, N.Y. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and for the baseball fan,
well, let's just say that we don't have to just include earth. One of the most overlooked holiday destinations, Cooperstown
is only 4 hours from St. Catharines...just up the New York State Thruway to Utica, about an hour past Syracuse.
Metros GM Mark Walters and wife Debbie,
along with Field Manager Kerry Hedden and his better half, Sandi, turned the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend into a 3-day stay
in paradise, at a Cottage on Lake Otsego, just 5 miles from baseball's legendary past. Upon seeing downtown Cooperstown
for the first time, Hedder described it as being "Niagara-on-the-Lake with a baseball theme", and those of us who have visited
NOTL know that the town hasn't changed since the turn of the 20th century. The same can be said for the home of Abner
Doubleday.
In addition to the Baseball Hall of Fame,
there is Doubleday Field, the supposed sight of the first organized baseball game in 1834, the Cooperstown Farmer's market
(a trip back to 1890), the majestic Lake Otsego (whose shores wash up against the edge of town), and the many, many shops
in the quaint downtown area which sell baseball memorabilia that cannot be found anywhere else.
We highly recommend this small corner
of heaven, as a great place to visit the next time you get a 3-day weekend. We have documented our trip to Cooperstown
with a few pictures...which are posted on our Photo page. Enjoy!!!
P.S. - J.R., you owe me $10.00!
One of the posted pictures proves who won our bet!
Well, did you have a good Thanksgiving?
We certainly did. This is just a note to let you know the website is being manned and updated on a regular basis, once
again. We will endeavor to give you something new to look at here at metrosbaseball.ca every week.
This week's update: While we were away,
the C.O.B.A. Major League managers and representatives met to vote on the Team and League awards, Trophy winners and All-Stars.
Manager, Kerry Hedden represented the Metros at the meeting and reported that "the votes are in and tabulated".
The results will be unveiled at the C.O.B.A. Major League Banquet, which will be held at the Dundas Air Force Club on
November 1st. This is always a great evening of comaraderie and fun...a chance to catch up with teammates and opponents
in a social, friendly atmosphere.
We'll publish more info about the
banquet as the night approaches. Please check this blog for the updates. Hopefully we'll have another
good turnout players from the League and especially the Metros.

Niagara Metros Bi-Weekly "Baseball Film
Feature"
.
This week on
our "Baseball Film Feature", we are taking you back to February of 2008...and looking at the testimony that
got Roger Clemens in so much trouble. If you missed it, on August 19th a U.S. federal grand jury indicted Roger
Clemens on charges of making false statements to Congress about his use of performance-enhancing drugs.
The 19-page indictment charges Clemens with three counts of
making false statements and two counts of perjury in connection with his February 2008 testimony before the House Committee
on Oversight and Government Reform. According to the United States attorney's office, Clemens faces a maximum sentence of
30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine, but under the current sentencing guidelines, a conviction would likely bring 15-21
months.
So what was it that he said that got the U.S. Congress so steamed? We have it for you right here.
Just press play, and judge for yourself...was Roger lying??
Don't forget to check out the
Metros Archive Section!
You will see the history of
our team, as well as the past glories of St. Catharines Senior Baseball in words and pictures dating back to the 1940's.
