UPDATES, UPDATES, UPDATES
We are finally through updating our website...we think.  It had been quite a while (February of 2006), since we last did a major update, but it turned out great, and we invite you to check out the various updates throughout the website.

In addition to all of the updates on our archive website, that we mentioned over the past few weeks, we did some major updates to some of the pages on our "Main" site.

Check out the new material on the following pages:

1.  The "Photo Album" - New pictures from the 2008 C.O.B.A. Banquet.

2.  The "Metros History" page - Some of the accomplishments we've achieved over the last couple of years have been added.

3.  "Our Sponsors" page - The financial lifeblood of our team.  Check out the list of corporate entities, that helped us out in 2008.

4.  The "Links" page - perhaps the biggest improvement in the entire website.  We deleted some dead links, updated some links that changed, and added some new, very relevent links.  And all of the links have been categorized and placed into a neat and easy to read package.

5.  Finally, we've added a new "Baseball Film Feature" to our home page.  This one is especially for the "younger" people that visit our website.

If you're like us on the Metros, you've often had the conversation surrounding the topic..."who is the greatest pitcher of all-time?  Well, for our money, the greatest pitcher of all-time doesn't lead any career lists, and isn't the first name that comes to mind.  But from 1961 to 1966, he was simply the most dominating pitcher in baseball history...and certainly the best pitcher we ever witnessed.  We're talking about the L.A. Dodgers' Sandy Koufax.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and check out a 3 minute tribute the greatest of them all.

GREAT NIGHT IN DUNDAS!
It was another outstanding night for the C.O.B.A. Major Baseball League, last Thursday, as the Dundas Chiefs did an excellent job (once again) hosting the league's year-end banquet and awards night, at the Dundas Air Force Club.  The St. Catharines Metros won a couple of the big "Team" awards, and had 3 players make the Johnson Division All-star team, but the 4 Metro nominees were shut out in their bids for individual trophies.

As we knew going in, St. Catharines had won their 10th Johnson Division title (3rd in a row) and their 5th Anson Buck Trophy, emblamatic of the team with the best overall record in the league, during the regular season.  In the balloting for the Individual Trophies, the Metros were well-represented as nominees, but came up short of the required number of votes to win the awards.

Rocco Spano finished second to Oakville's Kevin Lee in the voting for the Sportsman of the Year Award, while Brad Namtzu was 3rd, behind "Iron Man" Award winner Chris Dubnyk of Erindale.  In the Rookie-of-the-Year balloting, Rob Nixon came in 2nd, to the Burlington Brants' Matt McGraw...and in the battle for Top Pitcher honours, the Metros' Dustin Turner lost out to Chris Cooney of the Brants.  The other Major winners were: Batting Champion - Adam Cholewka (Glanbrook), Home Run Champion - Jeff Jarockis (Oakville), Playoff MVP - Kevin Treichel (Erindale), and League MVP - Frank Coccia (Erindale).

As for the All Star awards, each division's managers got together to pick the best players at each position from the 2008 season.  The Johnson Division featured 3 Metros...1st Baseman - Joe Roach; Outfielder - Rocco Spano; and Lefthanded Starter - Jason Ermers.  The other positions were filled by: Catcher - J.R. Crosby (Burlington), 2nd Baseman - David Morlog (Dundas), Shortstop - Taylor Lawton (Milton), 3rd Baseman - Chris Leenderste (Dundas), Outfielder - Matt McGraw (Burlington), Outfielder - Tim Sogan (Glanbrook), Designated Hitter - a tie - Adam Cholewka (Glanbrook) and Daniel Jagdeo (Burlington), Righthanded Starter - Chris Cooney (Burlington), and Relief Pitcher - Mike Grabauskas (Milton).

All in all, it was a great night...with an excellent meal, lots of laughs, and some fun baseball conversations.  Once again...thanks to Charlie Holman and the Dundas Chiefs for putting on a great night.  We've posted a few photos from the festivities on our "Photo Album".  Just click the link to the left of the page.  Talk to you next week.

EXCELLENT VIDEO FEATURE THIS WEEK!
While scouring the various film databases for the "Baseball Film Feature", we stumbled across a little beauty!  If you're into baseball movies (as we are here at metrosbaseball.ca) you're going to love this.  It is all your favourite clips from, "Major League","Bull Durham", A League of Their Own", "The Natural", "Eight Men Out", and "Field of Dreams"...all masterfully edited, and put together with John Fogarty's tune "Centerfield".  It is a real work of art.  Check it out at the bottom of this page.

AND...

We're really looking forward to Thursday night's COBA Major League Banquet.  A reminder, its at the Dundas Air Force Club on King St. East, in Dundas, and begins at around 6:00.  Can't wait to see everyone and "talk a little baseball" in November.

C.O.B.A. MAJOR LEAGUE BANQUET
One of the best nights on the COBA Major League calendar is fast approaching...the year-end banquet.  Over the past few years, this has been an outstanding event, with all 10 COBA teams, and many of the players from those teams in attendance.  Last year, the hall was overflowing with more than 130 players, and we expect more of the same in 2008.

The Metros will be well-represented at the podium, having already clinched the Johnson Division, as well as the Anson Buck Trophies.  We also have 4 players who have been nominated for individual awards..Dustin Turner (Top Pitcher), Rob Nixon (Top Rookie), Brad Namtzu (Iron Man), Rocco Spano (Sportsman).

The banquet takes place next Thursday (November 13) at the Dundas Air Force Club, and is once again graciously being hosted by Chiefs' Manager, Charlie Holman.  The festivities begin around 6:00, with dinner scheduled for 7:00, and the ceremonies at 8:00.

Metros players who have tickets are reminded to bring your ticket money...and those of you who don't have tickets, but wish to attend may do so.  Just inform Mark Walters of your intention to attend, and he'll make sure that a ticket is waiting for you at the door.  It should be a great night...we'll see you there!

ARCHIVE UPDATE COMPLETE

A few weeks ago, we mentioned that we were in the midst of updating some of the features on our "Archive Website".  We are pleased to announce that these updates are pretty much complete.  We added a few of the "In the News" items that have been written about us, over the last few years.  You can access our "New Millenium Headlines and Stories" page by clicking here

The other page that we updated is perhaps our favourite page in the entire website.  It's called our "Did You Know..." page.  This page includes stories and photos that document some of the greatest games, strangest occurences, funniest incidents, unbelievable records, and just general information and trivia, in Metros' history.

We have updated the older stories (which we posted in 2005) and added 10 new stories...bringing the total to 30.  If you have a few minutes to spare, it makes for a very interesting read.  The "Did You Know..." page can be accessed by clicking here.  Hope you enjoy!

Niagara Metros Bi-Weekly "Baseball Film Feature"

.

This week, on our "Baseball Film Feature" section, we have found a little gem that will make any "true ballplayer" chuckle.  It's a hilarious "home-made" film by what looks like a group of U.S. College ballplayers with a great idea about how we talk about the game we love, but in a language that only we can understand.  Check out this video, and count how many baseball euphamisms you're guilty of saying or doing when your "at the yard".  It's a little 3 minute masterpiece entitled "Shit Ballplayers Say".  And believe us when we say, "These guys can really bring the chedd..."

Don't forget to check out the Metros Archive Section!
You will see the history of our team, as well as the past glories of St. Catharines Senior Baseball in words and pictures dating back to the 1940's.
