In what was an outstanding 3-week long event, the United
States of America emerged victorious in the Baseball World Cup in Italy! The Americans defeated Cuba 10-5 in the final
on Sunday, and in so doing, won their second straight World Cup event. Team Canada, in an equally impressive showing,
won the bronze medal, after defeating Puerto Rico 6-2 on Saturday. It was the highest finish for the Canadians, ever,
at the World Cup...and their first baseball medal since they won a bronze at the 1999 Pan-Am games, in Winnipeg.
As for the Great Britain National Team...they qualified for the second round, but were simply overmatched against the stronger,
more established programs. But the British program is now headed in the right direction, and they can only get better
with time. The two St. Catharines Metros players with Britain were integral parts of this team, and the Metros wish
to congratulate both Brian Essery and Tim Collins on their participation, and excellent play, at this high-level event.
Collins, battling a leg injury that he sustained while playing for St. Catharines during the COBA Playoffs, managed to hit
.158 (3-19) with 3 walks over the course of the tourney. Essery finished among the top pitchers in the tournament (from
all the qualifiers with 12 inning pitched or more), as he compiled a very stingy 2.25 ERA. He was 1-1, and allowed just
11 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 4 in his 12 innings. The rest of the teams hit just .250 off him!
Justin
Smoak (a top-ranked prospect in the Texas Rangers chain) was voted the MVP of the tournament, after batting .300, with 9 HR's
and 21 RBI's for Team USA. Team Canada received quite a bit of post-tourney recognition, as well. Matt Kniginyzky
(Oakville, ON) was awarded the Best Earned Run Average Award after posting an ERA of 0.00 in three starts during the tournament. Rene
Tosoni (Coquitlam, BC) will also be bringing home some extra baggage after being awarded the Most Runs Scored Award. Two Canadians
were also selected to the All-World Team as Trystan Magnuson (Vancouver, BC) was named as top relief pitcher and Shawn Bowman
(Port Moody, BC) was selected at third base.
All in all, it was a fantastic tournament to follow, and there are
some future major-league players who fattened up their resumes during the event. We'll wrap up our coverage of the event
at metrosbaseball.ca, with a high-light package from the Bronze medal game...the 6-2 win for Canada over Puerto Rico.

P.S. - Your humble webmaster will be leaving

12. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your indulgence. And thanks, too, for continuing to get get your

TEAM CANADA DEFEATS PUERTO RICO TO CAPTURE BRONZE MEDAL
Team Canada got a big 3-run HR from Jimmy Van
Ostrand, and their 4 pitchers allowed just 7 hits, as they downed the powerful Puerto Rico National Team 6-2 at the Baseball
World Cup in Italy. In so doing, they picked up the bronze medal...emblamatic of Canada's highest finish in history
at the International event. Jamie Richmond, Dustin Molleken, Trystan Magnuson, and Jimmy Henderson combined for
a solid outing on the hill, with Magnuson picking up the win.
As well as
being the highest finish for Canada at the BWC, it is also the Senior National Team’s highest placing since earning
a bronze medal at the 1999 Pan-Am Games in Winnipeg. The medal also adds to Baseball Canada’s total, which is now
11, with two bronze and a silver for the Women’s National Team, and five bronze and one gold (1991 World Junior Championship
in Brandon, Manitoba ) for the Junior National Team.
Team Canada will receive its
bronze medal at the closing ceremonies of the 38th Baseball World Cup, which directly follows the gold medal game
between the United States and Cuba on Sunday, September 27th in Nettuno, Italy.

on Canada's incredible day, click here.
Congratulations to manager Ernie Whitt and all the players on a job well done!
Team Canada defeated The Netherlands 11-5 on Thursday,
and in so doing qualified for the Bronze medal game for the first time in the team's history, at the BWC 2009 in Italy.
The win also guarantees their highest finish in the history of the world event.
In a rather strange system, the
Canadians can only finish as high as third, despite tying Cuba (with a 3-1 record) for second place in 3rd Round action.
A description of the events of the past couple of days, and how the playoff system works can be seen here.
So, Canada will meet Puerto Rico on Saturday at 8:00 PM (Italy time) with the Bronze medal on the line.
Then on Sunday, the United States will meet Cuba for the Gold. Game time is 3:00 PM. Best of luck to Team Canada
as they face the talented Puerto Ricans. Go get that Bronze!
Team Canada outhit their opponents 12-6, as they ran
over Team Venezuela today, by a score of 9-2, at the BWC, in Italy. With the win, the Canadians remain undefeated at
2-0, and move into a 1st place tie with Cuba and the United States in Round 3 action.
The top four batters
in Canada's lineup (Adam Stern, Rene Tosoni, Shawn Bowman, and Jimmy Van Ostrand) all collected two hits, and were 8-17 (.471)
to lead the offense. Adam Leowen hit a solo HR, as well. The offense backed some excellent pitching, once again,
as Matt Kniginyzky (win), Bryan Dumsenil, Vince Perkins, and Chris Kissock combined on a 6-hitter.
In other action
Wednesday, Australia (1-1) downed The Netherlands (1-1) 5-2, The United States (2-0) defeated Puerto Rico (0-2) 3-0, and Cuba
(2-0) clubbed Chinese Taipei (0-2) 8-0. It is a big day on Thursday, as the Canadians meet The Netherlands,
while the U.S and Cuba meet in pivotal matches at 8:00 (Italy time). Should be a couple of great games!
TEAM CANADA WINS THEIR FIRST GAME IN ROUND 3 AT BWC
Team Canada scored three runs in the top of the
9th inning, as they defeated the favoured Puerto Rican National Team 3-0, on Tuesday. The Canadians become one of 4
teams with opening victories in 3rd round action.
Brett Lawrie homered and Rene Tosoni doubled home two more runs in
the eventful Canadian 9th, to give the pitchers more than they would need. On the mound, 4 Canadian pitchers (Nick Bucci,
Trystan Magnuson, Dustin Molleken, and Jimmy Henderson) combined on a 1-hit shutout against a team with 6 ex-major league
players...including Jose Valentin, Raul Casanova, Ruben Gotay, and Alex Cintron.
The other scores in the 3rd round
on Tuesday saw Cuba down Australia 2-1, The U.S. beat Venezuela 6-3, and The Netherlands crush Chinese Taipei 11-2.
Up next for Canada is a battle with Venezuela...Wednesday night at 8:00 (Italy time).
CANADA ADVANCES TO THIRD ROUND AT BASEBALL WORLD CUP
The third and final round is set at the Baseball
World Cup in Italy, and Canada has advanced, as one of the 8 finalists. Their 5-3 win over Chinese Taipei on Sunday,
left the Canadians with a record of 5-2 in second round play...assuring them of a top 4 finish in their pool. The list
of finalists and their second round records are listed below:
Pool F
Netherlands (6-1) Puerto Rico (6-1) Cuba (6-1) Venezuela (3-4) - tied with South Korea but allowed fewer
runs in Round 2 play.
Pool G
United States (7-0) Australia
(5-2) Canada (5-2) Chinese Taipei (5-2)
Canada's first game in third round action is Tuesday at 8:00
(Italy time) against Puerto Rico...who feature 6 ex-major league players in their lineup. Canada will then go on to
meet Venezuela on Wednesday, The Netherlands on Thursday, and Cuba on Friday...with the semi-finals Saturday and the finals
Sunday. We'll continue to keep you posted on all of the Canadian games...right here at metrosbaseball.ca.
Best of luck to Team Canada!
While the team from Great Britain played a number
of very good games, they came out of 2nd round play at the World Cup of Baseball winless. After a tough 10-3 loss to
Spain on Saturday, the Brits dropped a 6-1 decision to Venezuela on Sunday morning. The two losses left the Brits with
a record of 0-7 in second round play.
The Metros' Tim Collins played 3B in yesterday's match against Spain and
collected a pair of singles in 3 AB. The other Metros' representative, Brian Essery, finished up his tournament at 1-1.
He defeated Croatia 4-1 (tossing 5 shutout innings) in round 1, before losing a tough 4-1 decision (allowing 3 earned runs)
to Nicaragua in round 2.
The summaries and writeups from both games can bee seen here.
As for Team Canada...they are looking good for advancement into the 3rd round of 8. After losing their
first 2 in round two, they reeled off 4 straight victories, to go to 4-2. The top 4 teams in both F and G pools advance
to the 3rd round. Canada currently stands in 4th place...half a game back of Australia, and 2 games ahead of Mexico.
The Canadians wrap up their second round action at 8:00 (Italy time) tonight, as they take on Chinese Taipei.
We'll continue to follow Team Canada the rest of the way...right here at metrosbaseball.ca. Best of luck to the Canadians...and
congrats to the two St. Catharines players, Brian and Tim, for representing us in grand style, as this high profile event.
Way to go guys!
BRITAIN LOSES; CANADA WINNING AT 2009 BASEBALL WORLD CUP
Great Britain (with Metros players Brian Essery and
Tim Collins) dropped to 0-5 in second round action at the 2009 Baseball World Cup today. The Brits were whitewashed
6-0 in front of an enthusiastic Dutch crowd in the Netherlands. With no chance of moving on, against the incredibly
tough competition in Group F...Britain has two games left in the tourney to collect their first win in round 2 play.
While they have competed gamely, the GB has found the wins hard to come by. In fact, Britain has not competed against
this level of competition since the last time they attended the World Cup...in 1938!
Meanwhile in Italy, Team Canada
has a commanding 6th inning lead of 18-2, against the Netherlands-Antilles. The sure win will move the Canadians' record
to 3-2...putting them in excellent position to move on to the 3rd and final round at the Championships beginning next week.
Play continues tomorrow for both teams, as Britain takes on Spain at 1:00 PM...while Canada meets Italy at 8:00 PM(both
times European).
BRITS DROP ANOTHER TOUGH ONE AT BASEBALL WORLD CUP
Team Great Britain, once again, played a very sound
game against one of the top teams in the world...only to come up a bit short. Puerto Rico emerged from the hard-fought
contest with a 5-4 victory. GB actually held a 4-2 lead in this one, but the Caribbean nation scored 2 in the 6th to
tie, 1 in the 7th to take the lead, and then hung on for the win.
Puerto Rico's lineup featured 6 ex-major
league players... including Alex Cintron, Luis Matos, Ruben Gotay, and Raul Casanova. But the Brits, playing perhaps
their best game of the tournament seemed unfazed by their strong competition. In fact, the improving British team outhit
their counterparts 11-10 on the day.
The Metros' Tim Collins started at 3rd base, and went 0-2, with
a walk and an assist. The writeup and summary for this game (from GreatBritainBaseball.com) can be seen here.
Up next for the Brits is a Friday evening start, against another world power...the host Netherlands
club. That's 7:00 PM (Netherlands time).
By the way, Team Canada was also in action today (Thursday)
and won a hard-fought 3-2 game over Team Japan. The Canadians scored two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning
to win...after Japan scored one in the top of the inning (the International Tie-Break rule in effect).
With
the win, Canada gets back to the .500 mark in round 2 (at 2-2), and are in the thick of the race to final round in their pool.
We'll keep you posted as the tournament continues. Friday, the Canadians have a date with the Netherlands-Antilles at
8:00 PM (Italy time).
Team Great Britain, fighting an uphill battle after
dropping their first two games in round 2, gave the ball to the Metros' Brian Essery on the hill. Unfortunately, even
a well-pitched game by "Ess" was not enough, as Nicaragua defeated the Brits 4-1, at the 2009 Baseball World Cup.
Essery started and went 7 innings, allowing 8 hits and 3 earned runs...while walking 1 and striking out 2, giving
GB the quality start that it needed. But the offense slumbered on this day, collecting 1 run on just 5 hits against
Diego Garcia. Great Britain (now at 0-3 in round 2), face Puerto Rico, at 1:00 (Netherlands time) on Thursday.
The game summary, written by British Baseball writer Matt Smith, will be available here, later on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, after losing their first 2 games of round two, Team Canada needed a good
game today, and got it! The final score from Italy was Canada 4 - Mexico 2. Canada improves to
1-2 in group G, putting them back in the hunt to advance into the 8-team Tournament Finals, next week. The Canadians
have another tough one tomorrow at 8:00 PM (Italy time), as they take on Team Japan.
Best of luck to the Brits
and the Canadians on Thursday.
TOUGH COUPLE OF DAYS AT WORLD CUP FOR BRITS, CANADIANS
Team Great Britain advanced into second round play
on Saturday. And that is pretty well where the good news ends.
The Brits put forth a very good effort against
the world # 1 ranked Cuban National Team...but succumbed to the powerhouse Cubans by a score of 6-0, on Sunday.
Then this morning, GB had a rough one, as the team from South Korea demolished them 15-5...leaving the Brits at 0-2,
early in round 2. The two Metros (Brian Essery and Tim Collins) were not factors in the two losses, as P Essery
will not throw again until later in the week, after pitching them into the second round on Saturday. Meanwhile, Collins
(battling a foot injury he sustained while playing for St. Catharines in August) managed just one AB in the two
games, and picked up an assist at second base.
For all of the details from both games, click on this link, to access the story from GreatBritainBaseball.com.
Britain gets a well-earned rest on Tuesday, before returning
to the field Wednesday to take on Nicaragua at 7:00 PM(Netherlands time).
The news wasn't much better for Team
Canada. On Sunday, the Canadians, after sweeping through round 1 at 3-0, dropped their first of the tournament by an
8-0 score to Team U.S.A. After scoring 43 runs in round 1, Canada managed just 1 hit off highly rated San Diego Padres
farmhand Cory Luebke. Luebke walked 1 and struck out 10 in his 7 1/3 innings.
Then on Monday, Team Canada
had their hearts broken with an extra-inning loss to Australia. Canada and the Aussies were tied at 2, after the regulation
9 innings...and in IBAF events, the International tie-breaker is used, with Australia taking full advantage. After
starting the 10th inning with runners on 1st and 2nd, they scored both of them (along with a 3rd) on 2 hits and a costly Canadian
error. Canada could only manage a single run, and dropped the game 5-3. The Canadians, now 0-2, will try to rebound
at 8:00 PM (Netherlands time) on Tuesday, when they meet Mexico.
Speaking of Team Canada...we decided to post
the You Tube recount of the highlights of the Canadians' 19-1 win over Team Sweden on Saturday. It is our metrosbaseball.ca
Baseball Film Feature for the the week of September 14. Just scroll to the bottom of this page and witness the amazing
firepower that Team Canada showed in their 19-1 win.
TEAM GREAT BRITAIN ADVANCES TO 2ND ROUND AT WORLD CUP
Thanks, in large part, to an incredible start by the
Metros' Brian Essery in their 4-1 win over Croatia, Team Great Britain has advanced to the 2nd round at the 2009 Baseball
World Cup. The Brits got some late-inning heroics from Venezuela to reach their goal, however, and it was a nail-biting
couple of hours as GB waited an watched.
After having allowed 20 runs in their 3 round-robin games, the
Brits needed the Team from Germany to not only lose, but also allow 11 runs against Venezuela. After 7 innings the South
Americans were ahead by a comfortable margin of 7-1, but that wouldn't have helped GB's cause. But Venezuela tacked
on 5 more runs over the final 2 innings, and won the game 12-1...allowing GB to advance to second round play by the slimmest
of margins. Certainly, without Essery's masterful 3-hit shutout over 5 innings, Great Britain would be heading
home.
So, what do the Brits get as a reward for advancing to 2nd round play? Only a date with the number
1 team in the world...Cuba! The team flies from Croatia to the Netherlands today, in preparation for the first
game in round 2. That's a 7:00 PM (local time) start against the Cubans. The rest of the schedule (all times local
- Netherlands time) looks like this:
Monday, Sept. 14 - 12:00 - vs. South Korea Wednesday, Sept. 16 - 6:00
PM - vs. Nicaragua Thursday, Sept. 17 - 12:00 PM - vs. Puerto Rico Friday, Sept. 18 - 6:00 PM - vs. The Netherlands Saturday, Sept. 19 - 12:00 PM - vs. Spain Sunday, Sept. 20 - 12:00 PM - vs. Venezuela
Here is the link to
the story about Great Britain's "edge of your seat" day, yesterday...written by British Baseball writer, Matt Smith.
Just click here.
By the way, Team Canada easily advanced to round two, after defeating Team Sweden 19-1, yesterday. The
Canadians completed the first round with a record of 3-0, and a plus-minus in the runs department of 43-2. The going
will get tougher from here on in, however. Canada will meet the U.S., Australia, Mexico, Japan, the Netherlands-Antilles,
and Italy, in 2nd round play. Here is a link to a little clip on the Canadian's win over Sweden from yesterday.
Just click here.
With their tournament fortunes in the balance, Team
Great Britain gave the ball to the St. Catharines Metros' own Brian Essery...and he delivered...big time! Essery
tossed 5 innings of shutout baseball to pick up the win, as the Brits defeated Croatia by the score of 4-1, today in Zagreb.
The victory kept Britains' hopes alive for advancing to the second round at the 2009 Baseball World Championships.
The team will not know its fate until later today, after the completion of the days games. At that point, they'll find out
if their "runs against" is low enough to emerge from the tie-breaker, among all of the 3rd place teams in the various
round-robin groups.
Certainly Essery's effort in today's game will help the cause. Brian started and went
5 innings, allowing no runs on just 3 hits. He walked none and struck out 2. Tom Boleska came in and allowed 1
run in his 4 innings of relief...to record the save. Tim Collins, the other Metros' representative on Great Britain,
started at 2B and went 0 for 2, with a walk.
The recap and summary of the game (written by British Baseball
writer, Matt Smith) is available here.
By the way, Team Canada has qualified to advance to the second round...the first team in Group "C"
to do so. The Canadians defeated the Netherlands-Antilles 15-0 yesterday...following a 9-1 win over South Korea on Thursday.
At 2-0, with a plus-minus record of 24-1, it doesn't matter which team wins the final game of the round-robin today...Canada
or Sweden.
We'll continue to keep you posted on all the happenings in Europe...right here at metrosbaseball.ca.
BRITISH BACKS "TO THE WALL" AFTER WHITEWASH BY NICARAGUA
The British National Baseball Team have their work
cut out for them, if they want to advance to the 2nd round, at the 2009 Baseball World Cup. The Brits were soundly beaten
10-0, in a mercy-shortened game this morning in Zagreb Croatia. Team Britain now must win tomorrow against the home-standing
Croatians, and hope they can keep the runs against to a minimum...as the first tie-breaker among 3rd place teams from across
all 5 Pools is "runs allowed". After two games, the Brits have given up 19. Neither of the
Metros that are with Team Britain, 2B Tim Collins or P Brian Essery, played in today's game.
By the way, Team Canada got off to a great start in the tournament,
as they clobbered South Korea 9-1 in game 1 of the Group "C" round-robin. They play again this evening
against the Netherlands Antilles, beginning at 7:00 local time.
TEAM GREAT BRITAIN'S 9TH INNING RALLY COMES UP SHORT
Team Great Britain, complete with their two St.
Catharines Metros, took the field this morning, against one of the world's baseball powers...Team Japan. And GB, after
falling behind by a 9-2 score thru 8 innings, rallied with 5 - 9th inning runs (and had the bases loaded) when
the final out was recorded. Make the final score Japan - 9, Great Britain - 7.
Metros pitcher, Brian
Essery, did not appear in this game...as he is being held back for one of the next two starts. But Tim Collins
did play, going 0-5 and playing second base. Collins did have a chance to drive in a run with a Sac Fly in the 4th inning,
but was thwarted by the Japanese leftfielder. The OF tossed a strike to the plate, to nail GB runner Chris
Berset, who was tagging up on Collins' long fly ball. The result was a 7-2 double play, ending the threat.
Here is a link to the British Baseball Blog (written by Matt Smith) with his recount of all of today's action.
BRIAN AND TIM REPRESENTING THE METROS ON THE WORLD STAGE!
The St. Catharines Metros' dynamic duo of Brian
Essery and Tim Collins are, once again, on the other side of the world playing baseball! Brian and Tim are on the squad
representing Great Britain, at the 2009 Baseball World Cup. The two Metros players are in Zagreb, Croatia, awaiting
their first game of the tournament...which takes place on Thursday against powerful Team Japan (the 3rd ranked team in the
world). The game begins at 10:30 AM (local time).
The pair of St. Catharines athletes last represented Great
Britain at the 2007 European Championships, and helped the team to their best finish in 40 years...winning the silver medal.
Tim batted .227 (5 for 22), with 2 runs and 1 RBI, while having a very solid tournament at 3B defensively, committing
just 2 errors. Meanwhile, Essery was brilliant on the mound, over the course of his 3 starts. He was 1-1, with
a 3.31 ERA...pitching in both the opening and final games, as the "ace" of the staff.
The competition
this time around will be even greater, as the tournament includes every "baseball nation" in the world
(including Canada and the U.S.). The current world number 1 ranked team is Cuba, and they will be competing in Group
"B". Team Great Britain will be competing in Group "D", and will play a round-robin against Croatia,
Nicaraugua, and Japan (from September 9th - 12th).
The top 2 finishers of each Group, plus
the 6 best "wild card" teams from across all 5 groups, will advance to the second round (which will be played from
September 13th - 20th). The Semi-Finals and Finals will be played in Italy (between September 22nd - 27th), and will
consist of a 2 group round-robin, amongst the 8 remaining teams. By the way...Canada will be starting
out in Group C, and will play against the teams from Sweden, Korea, and the Netherlands-Antilles.
We will keep
you posted, right here at metrosbaseball.ca, on all of the results of the tourney. If you want to follow along yourself,
the link to all the action is: http://hosting3.sportingpulse.com/ www.2009baseballworldcup.com/index.php?id=49. Of course, we'll be paying special attention to our Metros representatives, Brian Essery
and Tim Collins. We're very proud of you, guys. Give 'em hell!!
The St. Catharines
Metros would like to extend heartiest congratulations to Greg Cranker, Tim Gasparrotto, Rob Scicluna, Blair Salt, and all
of the Erindale Cardinals...on their capturing of the Central Ontario Major Baseball League Playoff Championship. The
2009 title is their second in a row, and completes an incredible season in which they also won the Anson Buck Trophy, emblamatic
of their league "Regular Season Overall Pennant". As we all know, winning both prizes in the same season is
a very tall order.
The Cardinals won their Playoff title the hard way, winning three games in a row, on the final
day of the season...including 2 straight wins over the Glanbrook Grizzlies. The Grizz went into the final day of play
undefeated, after wins over Erindale and Oakville on Saturday. Erindale, after losing their first game, defeated Milton,
Oakville, and Glanbrook twice (including a 1-0 barnburner in the final game) to win the title. Congratulations also
go out to the Glanbrook club, who advanced to the finals after finishing in 7th place in the regular season. They won
5 games over the last 2 weekends to get to the finals. Way to go, guys!

GREAT NEW VIDEO IN OUR "BASEBALL FILM
FEATURE"
Finally...we have posted an amazing video for you to enjoy on our "Baseball
Film Feature". This week, we are featuring a segment from the 3rd of a series of baseball specials produced for
HBO, called "When it was a Game". It is a series of old colour 35 mm films, taken during the "glory years"
from the late 30's to the early '70's. The films are incredibly well restored, and with the music and superbly written
narration, they are a "religious experience" for any real baseball fan.
This week's segment is
a look at the amazing pitchers that dominated the decade of the pitcher...the 1960's. Jenkins, Gibson, Drysdale, Koufax,
and Marichal are among the incredible pitchers that are featured. And there's even a little something special at the
end of the segment for you Yankee fans. Just scroll to the bottom of this page...you won't be disappointed.

Feature"
.
This week on
our "Baseball Film Feature", we are taking you back to February of 2008...and looking at the testimony that
got Roger Clemens in so much trouble. If you missed it, on August 19th a U.S. federal grand jury indicted Roger
Clemens on charges of making false statements to Congress about his use of performance-enhancing drugs.
The 19-page indictment charges Clemens with three counts of
making false statements and two counts of perjury in connection with his February 2008 testimony before the House Committee
on Oversight and Government Reform. According to the United States attorney's office, Clemens faces a maximum sentence of
30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine, but under the current sentencing guidelines, a conviction would likely bring 15-21
months.
So what was it that he said that got the U.S. Congress so steamed? We have it for you right here.
Just press play, and judge for yourself...was Roger lying??
