BANQUET REMINDER AND WEBSITE UPDATES

The St. Catharines Metros are looking forward to the Central Ontario Major Baseball League Year-end Banquet, this coming Thursday evening.  A reminder that the festivities begin at about 6:00 with a cocktail hour.  The dinner will be served at about 7:00 or so, with the trophies and awards to be presented at around 8:15.  The Metros will be accepting their 11th Johnson Division Championship trophy, along with any individual awards and recognition that they may receive.

The event is taking place at the Dundas Air Force Club, and (as it has been so beautifully done for the past 4 years) is hosted by the Dundas Chiefs.  Players are asked to be there no later than 6:45...and those that are car-pooling from St. Catharines are asked to meet at the regular "road game" meeting spot at 5:30.  See you there!

WEBSITE UPDATES

We also have a couple of updates to the website to inform you about, this week.  First of all...we found a hilarious filmclip, and have posted it this week on our Baseball Film Feature.  Without giving too much away, Philadelphia Phillies stars Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard (when not involved in this week's World Series) are the gracious hosts of an unusual fantasy camp.  At least that's what one ordinary baseball fan found out!  Just scroll to the bottom of the page, and press PLAY.

Also this week, we wanted to let you know that our final "25th Anniversary" yearly recap has been posted.  We told you at the end of the run back in July, that you "can't write the story until the history is written".  Well, after a couple of months to distance ourselves and give us some perspective, we have written the story and added the pictures from our 2009 season.

We have also decided that we will continue this very well-received series into the future, and will also continue to add yearly recaps after each succeeding year.  To do that, we plan to replace our existing "Metros History" story with this series of yearly summaries.  We also intend to write a more in-depth history of the years prior to the formation of the Metros in 1985.  And as an added bonus,
(sometime before the end of this off-season), we'll be posting a "25th Anniversary" special feature.  It will be a "highlight package" if you will...written by the man who has been with the Metros from Day 1...General Manager, and former player / coach, Mark Walters.  Mark has vowed to recall some of the highlights, lowlights, special moments, favourite teams, favourite players, and overall general observations, impressions, and memories, from his 25 years with the Metros and the C.O.M.B.L.  Look for the feature "Walters' Recollections", to be posted sometime prior to the beginning of the 2010 season.

Until then, enjoy the 2009 story (and all of it's highs and lows), by clicking on "25th Anniversary" and then "2009".  Enjoy!

CONGRATULATIONS, AARON!

The St. Catharines Metros would like to take this opportunity to congratulate "their own" Aaron Butler, who was selected as the 2nd team All-Star 3rd baseman in the O.U.A., for 2009.  The Metros rookie, was "full value" for his selection, as he batted a solid .365 (8th in the league), with 19 hits (7th) in his 16 games with the Waterloo Warriors.  The 20 year-old student of "urban planning" added 10 runs, 4 RBI's, 3 walks, and a stolen base.

During the summer season with St. Catharines, Aaron (a native of Niagara Falls) batted .273, and collected 13 runs, 8 RBI's, 15 walks, and 7 stolen bases, in his 35 games in the COBA Major League.  He was the Metros' nominee for the C.O.B.A. Rookie-of-the-Year award, which will be handed out at next week's Year-end awards banquet.  Congratulations Aaron, on your COBA R-O-Y nomination, as well as your very well-deserved O.U.A. Baseball All-Star selection!

GREAT TO BE BACK

After a long and restfull 10 days in the Kawarthas, it's good to be back home, and back talking about baseball.  We will continue to do that each and every week, from now until the start of the 2010 baseball season.  Our weekly updates will keep you "in the loop" on happenings from within the world of Ontario Senior Baseball, the Central Ontario Major Baseball League, and the St. Catharines Metros.  Please keep checking in for your weekly "fix".

This week, we have to inform you about the C.O.M.B.L. meeting that took place last Monday.  The meeting in which the league voted for its All-Stars, and year-end award winners.  The results of the voting have been tabulated but the winners won't be announced until the league banquet, at the end of the month.  More on that in a bit.

The Metros, after their mediocre 2009 season, had just one player that was nominated for a year-end award...pitcher Dustin Turner, who was nominated for the League's Top Pitcher award.  Dustin will vie for the Trophy against 2 other outstanding choices...Gord Robertson of Oakville, and Chris Currie of Erindale.  Turner's (league only) numbers were impressive indeed, as he compiled a 3-2 record with a 1.98 ERA.  In his 41 innings, he allowed 29 hits and 14 walks...while striking out 66!

In addition, the Metros had 3 players who were picked as year-end Johnson Division All-Stars.  The results of all the voting will be unveiled, as mentioned, at the C.O.M.B.L. Year-end Banquet.  The banquet, as has been the case for the past 4 years, will be held at the Dundas Air Force Club, on King Street (just up from Volunteer Field).  You'll want to mark the date on your calendars...Thursday, October 29th.  The festivities get underway at about 6:00 for cocktails...with dinner at about 7:00 and the awards at 8:00.  Should be great night.  We hope to see you there.

ALSO THIS WEEK

Hey, check out our Baseball Film Feature for the weeks of October 13th and 20th.  It will take you back to a time when Major League Baseball was still in a state of innocence.  The early to mid 60's was a time when great players existed on just about every team, and left an indelible mark on the game...not to mention the memories of those of us who were old enough to have witnessed their greatness on a weekly basis...with NBC's Saturday "Game of the Week".  Scroll to the bottom of the page, and press "Play" to return to a simpler time!

Niagara Metros Bi-Weekly "Baseball Film Feature"

.

This week, on our "Baseball Film Feature" section, we have found a little gem that will make any "true ballplayer" chuckle.  It's a hilarious "home-made" film by what looks like a group of U.S. College ballplayers with a great idea about how we talk about the game we love, but in a language that only we can understand.  Check out this video, and count how many baseball euphamisms you're guilty of saying or doing when your "at the yard".  It's a little 3 minute masterpiece entitled "Shit Ballplayers Say".  And believe us when we say, "These guys can really bring the chedd..."

Don't forget to check out the Metros Archive Section!
You will see the history of our team, as well as the past glories of St. Catharines Senior Baseball in words and pictures dating back to the 1940's.
