METROS' 2011 CHRISTMAS BASH THIS FRIDAY!
Season's greetings, everyone! We trust that you
all had a safe and joyous Christmas, and were well-fed among family and friends. We know that was certainly the case
around here.
Nothing new to report this week, as we're still in "holiday mode", but we wanted to remind
you about the Metros' Christmas bash this coming Friday. The festivities begin shortly after 6:00...but feel free to
arrive any time after 4:00. The bash is a "BYOB" affair, but the team will be supplying a meal fit for a king.
We're hoping to serve the meal around 7:00, so we can get cleaned up and prepare for our Metros' 2011 Team awards at
8:00, or so.
All current and former Metros (and their better-halves) are invited to attend, and the party
is quite often one of the hi-lights of the year. The bash takes place at the home of Mark and Debbie Walters, 55
Ann Street, in Thorold. For you "Google Maps" people, the postal code is L2V 2J8. If you are still unsure
of how to get there, call (905) 227-0642 and ask for directions. There is a spacious school parking lot right next door
to the house, so please feel free to park in the lot.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday...and for those
who are unable to make it this week, please have a very Happy New Year. We'll talk to you in 2012, with the results
of our Metros team awards. Till then, be safe!

WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Like the song says..."We wish you a Merry Christmas,
and a Happy New Year"!
With Christmas arriving on Sunday of this week, (we choose to be politically incorrect...this
is Christmas, not one of the popular euphemisms), we thought we'd take a few column inches to wish you all the brightest
and merriest Christmas ever! Everyone in this great country of Canada has so much to be thankful for...and this is a
great time to remember that fact.
So, to bring that to light, we thought we'd like to say "Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Seasons Greetings"
to the following people...you all mean so much to the Niagara Metros, and especially to me, your webmaster, Mark Walters.
To the rest
of the teams in Ontario and especially to those teams (players, coaches, managers) in our own C.O.B.A. "AAA" Major
Baseball League. To
our sponsors (with a special shout-out to Cat's Caboose)...our door prize contributors, our silent gift donators...everyone
that helps us to pay the bills.
To the fans, who come out every Thursday night from May to August to watch
and support us.
To all the Metros players...(see you on the 30th for another Metros Christmas
extravaganza).
To our Coach...Kerry Hedden. Thank you for your sacrifice, your time,
your talent, your intelligence, and your class. You had a fantastic year...and it didn't go unnoticed by your team!
To the families of all the Metros...the wives, the girlfriends, the kids, the parents, the grand-parents,
the brothers and sisters.
To the umpires who do such a great job at all of our games...both at home and
on the road.
To the all the guys and girls at the City of St. Catharines Parks Department
and especially, the guys who work so hard at Community Park.
To the newspapers,
websites, and radio stations who promote our team and our games.
To everyone associated
with Senior baseball in Ontario.
and last, but not least...to my wife Debbie...
...have a very, very, Merry Christmas.
And,
hey, be smart over this holiday season! We want to be wishing you all "Merry Christmas" for many years
to come.
A SPECIAL HOLIDAY "METROS
BASEBALL FILM FEATURE"
Oh!! There's one more thing. As a special holiday
treat, we have posted a great new video for our "Baseball Film Feature". For the next two weeks, we will be
featuring a beautifully-edited and action-packed compilation of the 2011 Major League Baseball Postseason. After
watching this video, it will not be hard to understand why we love the game of baseball. The video features all of the
dramatics...the extra-inning HR's, the walk-off wins, the amazing pitching performances, the fantastic defensive plays,
the celebrations...everything that made the 2011 MLB Postseason one of the best in recent memory. It is 7 minutes of
pure heaven for any baseball fan. Just scroll to the bottom of the page, press "Play" and enjoy!
Talk to you next week.

ALL DRESSED UP FOR CHRISTMAS
Well, as you can see from the new pictures added to
our home page, we're getting excited about Santa's arrival in a couple of weeks (actually it's less than that, now that we
look at the calender)! So we've dressed up the website to reflect the season. Next week we'll post our annual
Christmas greeting, and then sit back and enjoy the holidays. Hopefully, you'll all get the chance to do the same.
SOME INTERESTING READING FOR YOU THIS
WEEK
In November, a new local sports magazine came out, entitled the "Niagara Sports Magazine".
It is the brain-child of former Brock University Communications Director, Shawn Whiteley, who takes over as the publication's
Publisher and Business Manager. Metros' followers may remember him taking some great action photos at our Community
Park home games in the past. The aim of the publications is to: "cover a wide variety of sports, highlighted by
great local and regional sports stories." The Niagara Metros are behind this publication 100%, and wish them the
best of luck in becoming the preeminent sports magazine in the Niagara Region.
As mentioned, the inaugural
issue was released in November, and (luckily for us), it is available on-line. The November issue is not just an
interesting read because it's new and exciting, but there's a story in it that features a former Metros player (2004 to 2006),
who's gone on to bigger and better things. The link to the magazine is here. If you click the link and turn to page 10, you'll find out all you need to know about former Metro (and
friend of the Metros) Mike and Jessica Kemp. It's a very good story.
Talk to you next week.

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!
The Niagara Metros management team got together on
the weekend and came up with an important date to mark on your calendars, regarding a much-anticipated upcoming event.
This is the official notification of that event, as we wrap up the 2011 season. The last item on the calendar every year, is the Metros Christmas
Extravaganza. This has become an annual classic, and is one of the year's highlights. Everyone is urged to
attend, and to bring their "significant other" for a fun night of presentations, gifts, food and drink, and reminiscing.
We also use the opportunity to hand out our 2011 Metros' Team awards for M.V.P., Top Pitcher, Top Rookie, Most Improved, Top
Offensive Player, Top Defensive Player, and the "Coaches' Award".
This year's event will take place on
Friday, December 30, at the home of Mark and Debbie Walters (where it has been for some 26 years). The doors will be
open at 3:00, and people are urged to get there as early as you can arrange, but if at all possible no later than 6:00.
Dinner will be served at about 7:00, and the awards will begin around 8:00 or so. Everyone will receive a "gift"
that reflects back on the season, and is usually a night full of laughter. There have been some legendary parties over
the years, and the 2011 bash promises to be another. All Metros players have received an email, with all of the details. You are asked
to please respond with a yay or a nay regarding your attendance for this event, as we need to purchase "gifts" and
food. If you can't make it, we need to know, so we don't spend more money than necessary. As you all know,
we are on a budget. But please, do what you can to get there. It is a big part of our season.
A NEW BASEBALL FILM FEATURE
Last week we posted what we think is an interesting feature...the
Top 25 baseball movies of all time. We took a look at 10 various Movie/Entertainment/Sports websites (who had done their
own list) and got a concensus Top 25. Not surprisingly, the top 3 were "Field of Dreams", "Bull Durham"
and "The Natural". But number 11 on that list (it probably would have been higher, but some of the lists we
drew upon were assembled before it was released) is the recent release, "Moneyball". It is the story
of how Oakland A's General Manager Billy Beane assembled a winning team in the early 2000's, by using a computer to identify
low-cost but highly-skilled players, that other teams had given up on. In honour of our "Top 25 List" (which can still be seen on our Home Page
Blog, below this story) as well as a celebration of the movie's upcoming release to DVD and "Pay-per-View, we have posted
the Theatrical Trailer for the movie. "Moneyball" stars Brid Pitt as Billy Beane, Phillip Seymour Hoffman
as A's Manager Art Howe, and Jonah Hill as computer-geek turned Assistant G.M. Peter Brand. If the trailer
is any indication, "Moneyball" looks like an instant classic. Perhaps the next time we do a Top 25 list, it
will be at the top. Press "play" and enjoy!
