It is with great pride that the Central Ontario “AAA” Major Baseball League announces its 10^th annual Hap Walters Memorial Tournament for 2013.  As you’ll recall, last year was the third year that the tourney was played in the Mississauga area after having been a successful event in St. Catharines for 6 years.  With 5 divisions (each playing out of the same park) and 20 teams, the competition was incredibly high, and produced some fantastic baseball.  The Mississauga SW Twins defeated the Windsor Athletic Association in the finals.   Of course, one of the long-standing perks of the “Hap” is that it also provided a great warm-up for the Elimination Tourney in Windsor, which is just two weeks later on the Senior “AAA” schedule.

Once again, we’re ‘planning’ on a 20-team event, being played out of 5 parks -  Milton’s pristine,  new dual-park facility behind the Milton Sport’s Center, Connorvale Park in Etobicoke,  Oakville Park and Clarkson Park with  Erindale’s Ninth Line (two parks),  serving as the back-up facilities.  The new parks in Milton were designed by the same builders of the Courtright and Chippewa parks in the Sarnia area and Connorvale in Etobicoke.   Both parks are identical with 325ft. down each line and 400 ft in CF.   The COBA Major Senior League held their playoffs there in 2012 and the OUA operated their kickoff league-play tournament there also last season.  All teams raved about the quality of the fields themselves.  Dressing room facilities are being constructed this season and should be up and ready for our Hap Walters Tourney and the present parking areas are to be extended this spring.

The important change this year is that we will either go with 20 teams or 16 teams,  depending on the number of entries.  Efforts to make the tournament work with 18 teams last season was challenging, to say the least.  If a 20-team format,  5 Divisions playing a 4-team round-robin will be scheduled; and 16 teams will reduce the Divisions to 4, with the same round-robin format.   Quarter-finals (if necessary) will be played Saturday night, and the Semi-Finals and Finals will take place in Milton on Sunday.  That’s a minimum of 3 games for non-playoff teams, and up to 5-6 games for the teams that advance to the finals!  We will forward details on the divisions, format, and schedule, once we secure all team entries.  Please get your entry forms and cheques in as soon as possible so your team doesn’t miss out. 

Cheques and Applications are due by May 15, but cheques may be post-dated to May 31.  Available openings will be filled on a priority basis, with returning teams getting first shot. New teams will receive spots based on the date their applications and cheques are received.

SCHEDULE:  Each team must play one game on Friday evening.  Each team will play two games on Saturday, which will be back to back where possible. Games will be played in Milton – 2 diamonds), Etobicoke (Connorvale Park). Clarkson (Clarkson Park) and Oakville (Oakville Park)  All parks are within 20 minutes of each other. Tournament headquarters will be at Milton.
